Information and Technology Skills 5.SI.1 Apply criteria to determine appropriate information resources for specific topics and purposes. 5.SI.1.1 Use various types of resources to gather information (including print and online media).
Materials Needed: Computer with Internet access
Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to introduce the students to the founding fathers and research methods in preparation for their final performance task.
Procedures: Focus and Establish Review (5 minutes)
Review previous lesson, have students brainstorm about who the founding fathers could be.
Statement: (1 minute)
Today we will be introduced to six of our founding fathers.
Teacher Input: (15 minutes)
Tell students they will be learning about George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Ben Franklin and Alexander Hamilton.
Introduce the final performance task.
Tell students they can choose one of the six founding fathers.
Tell students that today we will be learning how to conduct research
Guided Practice: (15 minutes)
Hand out the list of preselected websites the students will be allowed to visit.
Visit a website and choose a founding father to use as an example.
Walk through a website so that students see what research is considered useful to their final task.
After completing a walk through, tell students they are free to conduct their research.
Independent Practice: (20 minutes)
Students will conduct their research on the Internet
Closure: (5 minutes)
Have students come to a stopping point in their research
Inform students they will have one more class period to gather information
Assessment:
Participation in research (see Participation rubric)
Differentiation:
ELL/LD: Vocabulary lists will be provided.
AIG: AIG students will be allowed to conduct research in books in the library.
